As an interior fit-up of an expansive penthouse in the heart of Toronto, the design infused contemporary elements in an existing traditional shell. The use of clean lines, a minimal approach to materiality, millwork design and finishes, contribute to an atmosphere of “inviting lightness” that permeates the space, imbuing the elegant minimal residence with an ethereal quality and enabling rooms to flow from one to the next. The tone-on-tone light colour palette delicately highlights different architectural elements, maintaining a continuous perception of space and harmony between architectural elements and built-ins. Custom millwork was designed to optimize storage and disappear when not in use allowing the space to be re-purposed for entertaining or private charity events and functions.
The monochromatic selection of finishes and light colour palettes were highly scrutinized to achieve a refined and seductive spatiality, allowing the colour and variety of other changing elements to animate the space. Radiant heated limestone floors throughout complement the muted palette with a dual function, warming in winter and cooling in warmer months. Architectural elements are vertically oriented to take advantage of the high ceilings and draw the eye upward. The subtle use of back-painted glass and stainless steel in conjunction with thin, continuous LED illumination around the elevator doors, highlights the main entry way as a clean, modern and engaging architectural feature within a more traditional context.
